Artist's Comments

Entry for Sorrow Dragon and Zarathus contest, a collaboration betwen me and my love ~chaoka. Transferred from my previous account. Here are some of the comments from back then when I was ~ arrain that I do not want to be lost:

~dalamarlotherus I'm liking the very relaxed poses and their beautiful wings. I love the detail that went into those.

!sorrowdragon i like the messages around it. thank you

*zarathus Yay...I like this a lot. The idea is good..and picture is good too. I like it a lot. Thanks.

~astercrow The top drawing is well done- easy to read outlines, soft little details, and obviously well thought out. Some people fail horribly when drawing multiple characters engaged with each other, but they look so fluid together. You can easilly feel the deep love they have- you know that feeling... when your arms are interlocked with the one you love, and you simply relax and look at each other, and you know the feelings are mutual. The gentle grasp, flick of a tail, and wings all around. It's quite lovely. I see you did a nice job woring out the wing perspective on Sorrow, but perhaps if it were thicker at the top it would give a sense of musculature instead of only thin feathers.

The bottom drawing is excellent as well. The outlines are very clean and shary, and definitely easy to pick out the individual characters, even among all the feathers. Lots of work put into drawing each individual feather. I also love the poses in this drawing- a playful moment in their sweet embrace. I love the tail wrapped around Sorrow's neck and the thumb pressed against the lips of Zara. That is simply wonderful, so beautiful and powerfully emotional. I especially love the flow of Zara's body in this, too. It makes you believe that she was lying down and suddenly leans up to get closer to the one she loves... or either that, she is starting to lean back and relax, knowing that everything is alright since she knows he loves her. A very gentle moment.

The thing that really gets me about this submission though, is the power that both these pictures make combined. Perhaps you have heard that the sum of all parts still do not equal the whole? That is so true for this piece. Not only do each scene make you feel as though you've entered a moment in this pair's life, but it gives you a before and after positioning- a beginning and end. The text reinforces this so strongly. The famous "Do you love me? Yes, do you love me?" Something all couples say to each other, just to hear that they are loved, even if they already know it. The two things I love specifically about the text- the colors and the positioning. It doesn't matter where the text is located; you know which character is saying what. Even if this image is in black and white- you know Zara is colorful and Sorrow is dark grey. I think it's a wonderful way to incorporate color in an otherwise black and white outline drawing. My compliments to whoever thought of that. Also, I love the (leading and curning?) positioning of each letter- it shows playfulness and also gives a well thought out feeling. You could have simply left the letters anti-aliased together in a straight line, but you chose not to do so, and I really think it helps to show emotion and even a slight tone of voice.

You two did a wonderful collaboration on this drawing, it is really an amazing piece combined like this. It's a shame this wasn't really seen so deeply by Zara and Sorrow, unless they perhaps saw it but didn't completely realize the work involved in this outstanding piece. Anyhow, it's a great work.
